For the Love of Italy – 4 Fun Facts about Italian Food

This may come as a surprise, but we love our Italian food. Ok, so it may not be a secret, but it is true, and many American’s seem to love it as well. We did a little research on Italian food and we thought to share some of the interesting facts that we found about the nation that inspired the best Italian Restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks:


1. Italian Wine Wasn’t Always Good


For many years, Italian winemakers were thinking of quantity over quality. Thankfully, in the 1970s, Lucio Caputo, an Italian Trade Commissioner in New York, pushed the American media to give Italian wine another chance, which made Italian winemakers improve their product. In the 1980s winemakers started using better methods for the wine-making process. This dramatically increased the demand for better quality, Italian made wine. In the 1970s, Italian wine represented just over 18 percent of the U.S. imported wine market and by the 1980s, it represented roughly 55 percent.  


2. Pasta Can Be Over Cooked


Have you ever heard of the trick of throwing pasta at the wall to see if it is done? Well, we can assure you that this doesn’t work. Well, it does work, but it is a bad way to see if your pasta is ready to eat. Pasta is very easy to overcook, especially with store bought brands giving you a timeframe to cook it in instead of an exact time. The only way to truly tell if your pasta is done is by tasting it. Set your timer for the lowest time given on the package and taste to see if it is done. It should be al dente (to the tooth), so a little firm to bite. The more Pasta cooks the gummier it gets, so if it sticks to the wall, it is overcooked.

3. Alfredo is a Person


Alfredo is very popular in the United States. We have many different types of recipes featuring it, like chicken Alfredo and Fettuccine Alfredo. However, did you know that Alfredo is actually a person? He was a restaurant owner in Rome over a century ago. Later in the 1970s, many American celebrities were guests of his restaurants. They introduced his recipes in a new restaurant which opened in New York City when they came back. Thus, the beginning of the Alfredo craze!

4. Pasta Shapes Matter!


Although all the different shapes consist of the same ingredients and they do taste the same (for the most part), it does make a difference what sauce you pair with them. Pasta noodles are shaped to collect sauce or prevent it from clinging. It’s not like you can’t eat certain pastas with certain noodles, it just makes it a little bit more enjoyable or easier to eat. Thin noodles, such as spaghettis are typically served with tomato sauce or pesto, while tube pasta does well with meat sauce as the sauce is able to cling to the texture of these types of pasta. Delicate noodles go well with light sauces, and heartier noodles can be paired with heavier sauces.
