What is a Calzone?

Chances are you’ve heard of a calzone, and if you’ve been to our Italian restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks , you’ve likely seen them on our menu. However, ours are a little sweeter than the traditional Italian calzones. If you’ve never tried a calzone, you may not really know what they are. Well, Li’l Rizzo’s is here to explain! What is a Calzone?  A calzone is a type of Italian pizza that is folded and filled. It takes on the shape of a half moon and is made of salted bread dough. A typical calzone is baken in an oven and filled with salami or ham, mozzarella, ricotta and Parmesan or pecorino cheese, amalgamated with an egg. However, regional preferences differ and you can find calzones that include other toppings typcially associated with pizzas. Smaller calzones, known as panzerotti, can also be fried in olive oil rather than baked. You can even find dessert calzones like the one's we have here at our Lake of the Ozarks Italian restaurant .
