New Year's Eve The Italian Way

The year is quickly coming to a close and the team at Li'l Rizzo's is excited for what the new year has to offer. 2017 was a great year and there were a lot of great memories made here at the Lake of the Ozarks. Although this year is ending, a new year is beginning and the best Italian restaurant at the Lakeof the Ozarks is looking forward to all that 2018 has to offer. Why not ring in the New Year the Italian way? Check out a few of these traditions from Italy.

Food for Good Fortune

As with most Italian festivities, food plays an important part in the New Year celebrations. Similar to Christmas, families typically get together for a large meal to ring in the new year. The star of the meal is the lentils, which symbolizes money and good fortune for the coming year. In addition to lentils, in many parts of Italy, they will also serve cotechino, which is a large spiced sausage, or zampone, which is a stuffed pig's trotter. The pork symbolizes the richness of life in the coming year.

Dance the Night Away

In America, it's typical for celebrations to fizzle out shortly after the clock strikes midnight. However, in Italy, it’s typical for celebrations to last until sunrise in order to see the new year arrive. Some smaller towns build a bonfire in the central square where villagers will congregate into the early morning. Dancing is also popular and many towns have public music and dancing. Rome, Milan, Bologna, Palermo and Naples put on huge popular outdoor shows with pop and rock bands. These events can also be seen on television too.

Red Underwear for Luck

It's tradition in Italy to wear red underwear to fend off evil spirits and negativity, as well as bring happiness in the coming year. The color red has been used for centuries to ward off war and other disasters, so if you're strolling the streets of Italy on December 31, you may see red underwear hanging in the streets or shop windows. However, it's traditional that your red capodanno (underwear) be new and a gift from someone else, so no digging out an old pair, and if you buy your own, you're cheating.

Celebrate with Horns & Fireworks

In Italy, there are huge midnight firework displays to celebrate the coming of the new year. Most towns have public displays in a central square, however, private parties will also include firecrackers or sparklers as well and will last until the early morning. In fact, Naples is known for having one of the best and biggest New Year's firework display in Italy. In the coastal towns and near bodies of water, it's typical for boats to blow their horn to ring in the new year. According to superstitions, evil spirits don't like loud noises, so this is their way to ensure they are all scared off before the start of the new year.

Out with The Old & In with The New

In southern Italy, it is custom to throw your old things out the window, typically pottery, to symbolize your readiness to accept the new year. However, if you don't feel like throwing your items out the window, another acceptable tradition is crashing pots and pans together at your front door to scare away the evil spirits.

BINGO!

During many Italian New Year's Eve parties, everyone will settle around the table for a game of tombola, which is similar to bingo. Tombola was created in the 1700s as an alternative to gambling, which during that time the church didn't approve of. King Charles of Naples made a concession to the Catholics and said he would only ban gambling during the Christmas period. However, Neapolitans found a way to get around this new law by playing tombola at home during the holidays.

An Italian Christmas

Christmas is just days away and here at Li’l Rizzo’s, we thought it would be fun to take a look at Christmas celebrations in Italy. Believe it or not, Christmas in Italy can look very similar to Christmas here in the United States. There are several traditions, though, that make it unique to their culture. The Christmas season in Italy lasts from the beginning of December till January 6th for La Befana. While St. Nick is a part of their Christmas celebrations, he is not the focus. Instead, they celebrate a kind "old witch" who brings gifts to the children on January 6th. The best Italian restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks has a few other interesting and fun facts about Christmas in Italy! Check them out below and come enjoy the best Italian food at the Lake of the Ozarks this holiday season.

THE 8 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

You can expect to see a lot of singers and hear traditional carols around Italy during the 8 days before Christmas, or Novena. If you're around Rome, Southern Italy or Sicily, you may even be lucky enough to see shepherds (zampognari) who come down from the mountains and play bagpipes.

GIFT EXCHANGE

When Italian’s choose to exchange their gifts depends on where they are from. In most places, gifts are exchanged on Christmas day after lunch. However, there are a few northern towns that believe that the blind St. Lucia brings gifts to the children on December 13th, and so they open their gifts then.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS

All throughout Italy, you'll find the joy of Christmas spread throughout the towns and cities. There are Christmas markets full of sweets, fruits, nuts and even gifts. You'll still find Santa around town so you can take photos with him, but you'll also find La Befana (the good witch) so you can take photos with her as well.

SHARING A MEAL

Some Italians believe that Christmas Eve is a day of fasting, and though they may eat a light dinner that night it will mostly consist of fish and no other meats. Christmas dinner, on the other hand, is an extravagant meal, and many Italians will save up so they can make it amazing. On Christmas night, the children will leave milk and "biscotti" (biscuits) out for St. Nick, but on January 6th, they leave "vino rosso" (red wine) for La Befana.

"BUON NATALE" (MERRY CHRISTMAS) FROM LI'L RIZZO'S

The entire family at Li'l Rizzo's wants to wish you a very Merry Christmas! Both of our restaurants will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day so that we can enjoy the holiday with our family. We hope to see you after the holiday and celebrate the end of this wonderful season at the best Italian restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks! Merry Christmas!

The Best Start To Any Meal

Appetizers make a great start to any meal, and we mean ANY meal. Appetizer, in fact, refers specifically to “building the appetite”.  At Li’l Rizzo’s, we take our appetizers very seriously. We serve a variety of nine of the best appetizers at the Lake of the Ozarks. Whether you come just for the appetizers, or you enjoy them while you wait for the best Italian food at the Lake of the Ozarks to be served, we are sure you’ll love them. All of them! To get you in the appetizer mood, we have some fun facts about these meal starters and an introduction to the delicious appetizers we have at Li’l Rizzo’s.

Appetizer Fun Facts

  • What’s the difference between an appetizer and hors-d'oeuvres? Hors-d'oeuvres translates to “outside the meal” and is generally a one-bite item that is stationary or passed around and served on a tray.

  • Sometimes, appetizers are served by themselves without a meal afterward. The most common place for this is at many receptions and cocktail parties.

  • In China, appetizers are called lěng pán ("cold plate"), or qián cài ("before dish") in Mandarin.
