Get Ready For School With Li'l Rizzo's!

Many schools across the nation are starting back up this month! Both Osage Beach and Camdenton both start school on August 21. With just over a week to go, we want to help you get prepared and make sure you start school off on the right foot. Here are a few things that can help you with the 2017/2018 school year!

Get School Supplies

Between notebooks, pencils, folders and textbooks, your child will be carrying around a lot, so make sure they have a good backpack that can hold all the necessities. Most schools will let you know what each grade needs and some times teachers will have specific items they want their students to have.

Get Plenty of Rest

Although it was fun staying up late this summer, it's time to get back to a regular sleeping schedule. We want to make sure you're ready for the first day of school, and this begins with making sure you're getting enough sleep. Sleep is an important part of your physical health, and it also helps with making sure you can pay attention in school. A study showed that students who got B's and better got 17 - 33 more minutes of sleep during the week nights and went to bed 10 - 50 minutes earlier than those who got C's and below.

Get A Routine

During the summer, routines kind of go out the window because of vacations, sleep overs, camps and all the other fun things you get to do during the summer. Having a routine can make things easier during the school year. It will help keep all the after school activities in order and it will help make sure that things like homework get done.

Get Your New School Clothes

Depending on the school your child attends you may have uniforms or dress codes. There are places at the mall where you can get uniforms that match the school guidelines. Also be sure to verify the school dress code before purchasing new school clothes. You may also want to keep an eye open for some seasonal clothes such as jackets and warm shirts. It may still feel like summer outside, but before you know it the weather will be changing!

Celebrate With Li'l Rizzo's!

With summer coming to an end soon and school starting back up, make sure you leave room for one last hurrah! Things can get a little crazy, hectic and stressful, so take some time to relax and celebrate the beginning of a new school year.

While you're out shopping for all of your school supplies and clothes, remember to make Li'l Rizzo's a part of your day! We have the best Italian at the Lake of the Ozarks and we are a great place to sit down and relax from all of the busyness and preparation for school. We have a delicious lunch and dinner menu, and our Osage Beach location is conveniently located at the Premium Outlet Mall. Don't forget, we also have a great carry out menu. Imagine a busy day full of shopping and preparation, and instead of having to make dinner you can stop by Li'l Rizzo's for the best take out at the Lake of the Ozarks. We wish you all a wonderful school season!

The Most Delicious Day Of The Year!

Saturday, July 29 is National Lasagna Day! To celebrate, we wanted to take a look at the history of this delicious, traditional Italian dish. However, it's origins might surprise you! Before you come into Lake of the Ozarks' best Italian restaurant to satisfy your cravings for lasagna, let's look into the history of it.

Not So Traditional Italian

Although lasagna can be found at nearly every Italian restaurant, it technically didn't originate in Italy as you may have thought. Its history can be traced way back to Ancient Greece. The name Lasagna, or "Lasagne" is derived from the Greek word 'Laganon,' which is the first known form of pasta. However, Laganon was not a traditional lasagna as we know it today with traditional Italian ingredients, but it was composed of layers of pasta and sauce. It was named for the method in which it was made, not for the ingredients.

Modern Day Lasagna

While Italy may not have been the inventors of this layered dish, they certainly can be credited for perfecting it! The lasagna dish that we know and love today made its debut in Naples, Italy during the Middle Ages. During those times, lasagna was perfect for feeding a lot of people. and was usually made on special occasions. When Italian immigrants made their way to America, they brought along their favorite variations of this delicious dish. That's why today there are so many different variations of lasagna. While some prefer a meatier sauce made with pork or ground beef, other add roasted vegetables and spinach to the layers. There is no wrong way to make lasagna!

Lasagna at Li'l Rizzo's

Li'l Rizzo's has a homemade lasagna dish that you can order in celebration of National Lasagna Day! Made with 6 layers of pasta, meat sauce, ricotta cheese and Italian sausage. It's then topped with a blend of mozzarella and Provel cheese and then baked. It's mouth watering cheesy goodness!

Celebrate National Lasagna Day at Li'l

If you LOVE lasagna like we do, come on by Lake of the Ozarks' best Italian restaurant to celebrate National Lasagna Day! We have many other dishes in addition to lasagna, so no matter what you're in the mood for, we have something for everyone! We hope to see you Saturday to celebrate National Lasagna Day!

The Italian History of Amaretto

The importation of Amaretto to the United States didn't occur until the 1960s, however, once it came to the States, it quickly became a hit! Whether as a mixer in cocktails or in food preparation, people couldn't get enough of this almond flavored liqueur. While you may be able to guess it came from Italy from the Italian sounding name, Amaretto has a very old and interesting history.

What is Amaretto?

The word Amaretto is actually Italian for "a little bitter." It's a unique liqueur with an almond flavor, however, it doesn't always contain almonds. When Amaretto is made, the standard base of the liqueur is made from either apricot pits or almonds or both. Like many other spirits, it may contain a number of added spices or flavorings. If almonds are not used, the flavor is achieved through apricot kernel oil, burnt sugar and a variety of spices.

Its Italian Origins

Amaretto is the liqueur of love that was first produced in Saronno, Italy. While this liqueur is often associated with the little Italian cookies that are flavored Amaretto, its history goes much, much deeper.

Amaretto dates back to the 16th century. The local Saronno legends suggest that an artist, Bernardino Luini, who is a student of Leonardo Da Vinci, traveled to the town in 1525. He was commissioned to paint frescoes in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. He needed a model for his Madonna for the "Adoration of the Magi" fresco. A beautiful, widowed innkeeper became his muse, and some say she became much more to him. She fell madly in love with the artist and to demonstrate her feelings, she gave him a special gift, which was the first ever Amaretto. Her recipe was a blend of brandy, apricot kernels and a secret mix of spices.

Amaretto Today

There are two producers of Amaretto who both claim this legend as their own. Lazzaroni, who are known for their amaretti biscotti cookies, and Disaronno.

In 1786, the Lazzaroni family first made their famous cookies for the King, and to this day, they remain the most popular brand of amaretti. In 1851, they created their Amaretto Liqueur, which is an infusion of the cookies with a little caramel for color. Their Amaretto is still produced and bottled in Saronno, Italy, and they claim it's still based on the widow's recipe.

Disarono also claims to be the originators of Amaretto. They have been producing Amaretto since 1900, and claim their recipe comes from the Reina family, who insist theirs came directly from the widow and passed down from generation to generation. It's thanks to a marketing campaign by Disaronno that led to the rise in popularity of Amaretto across Europe and the U.S. during the 1960s.

Amaretto at Li'l Rizzo's!

Amaretto is a popular liqueur to use in cocktails, and you are most likely to find it on the menu in an Amaretto Sour, which is Amaretto, lemon juice and an optional egg white. At Li'l Rizzo's there are a few drinks on our specialty menu that feature this delicious Italian liqueur.

Banana Split Daiquiri - Amaretto, rum, banana liqueur, cream, pineapple juice, grenadine, nutmeg.
Pineapple Upside Down Martini - Pineapple juice, vanilla vodka, grenadine, amaretto.

"Jim," that is Jim Biggs, has performed in concert with such big names as Chuck Berry, Barbara Mandrel, and Barbara Fairchild. Jim played the Hotel Circuit pickin' country and rock music during the 70's and 80's all across the country. He owns a pile of vintage guitars, mostly Les Pauls, and has been known to bring several of them to the shows and switch guitars as they become too hot to handle! As for "Me," Frank Phelps grew up playing rock music and performed in many bands that no one has ever heard of, but had fun just the same. Frank has performed from California to Canada in night clubs, hotels, and basements, doing concerts, dances, parties and festivals.

10 Things You May Not Have Known About Pasta!

At Li'l Rizzo's, there is no denying that we LOVE pasta, whether it's being twirled on a fork or baked in lasagna. On average, Americans eat about 19 pounds of pasta per person per year according to the National Pasta Association. However, Italians consume about 56 pounds of pasta per year. Despite our love of these noodles, how much do we know about them? Li'l Rizzo's has 10 interesting facts about pasta you may not have known about.

1. Al dente keeps you full longer. When pasta is cooked al dente, which means "to the tooth" or "to the bite," it takes longer to digest. Not only will this keep you fuller longer, it also helps the pasta keep your blood sugar levels more stable.

2. There is a method to pasta shapes and sauces. The reasons why there are so many shapes of pasta is that the weight, texture, and shape all contribute to the way that it holds onto sauce. Basically, certain pasta shapes are better with certain sauces than others. Creamy sauces are better with long, flat pasta like linguine, while short tubular shapes are better paired with thick, chunky sauces.

3. Pasta can be a good way to get protein. While we often think of pasta as a carb, eating pasta can be a good way to get a little extra protein into your diet. One cup of cooked spaghetti can have around 8 grams of protein and supplies your body with several of the amino acids we need to stay healthy.

4. The Ancient Chinese ate pasta before Italians. You may think of pasta as an Italian dish, but research shows that the Chinese were actually the first to eat pasta. A 4,000-year-old bowl of noodles was found in China. It's a common belief that Marco Polo actually brought pasta from China to Italy during the 13th century.

5. There are more than 600 pasta shapes. According to the National Pasta Association, there are more than 600 different shapes of pasta produced around the world.

6. There is a reason behind the names of the pasta shapes. Pasta comes from the Italian word for paste, as many types of pasta start with a pasty mix of flour and water. However, that isn't the only name with meaning. Farfalle is the Italian word for butterflies, and spaghetti is Italian for little strings.

7. First came pasta, then came marinara. People had been eating pasta for thousands of years before anyone thought to add tomato sauce. This is partly due to do the fact that tomatoes are not native to Europe, and weren't introduced to the continent until the Spanish explorer Cortez brought them in 1519 from Mexico. Tomatoes and pasta soon became an iconic combination in Italy.

8. Thank Thomas Jefferson for Macaroni! Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, is credited with introducing pasta to America back in 1789.

9. Italians eat a lot of pasta. It's no surprise that Italians eat the greatest amount of pasta worldwide. However, what you may not have expected is that Venezuela eats the second most and Tunisia eats the third most. Who would have thought? So if Italians eat the most amount of pasta, how much do they eat? The International Pasta Organizations claims that if Italians ate their average yearly amount of pasta in spaghetti shape (rather than the numerous other varieties of pasta shapes), they would eat approximately 600 million kilometers of spaghetti, which is enough to wrap around the Earth 15,000 times!

10. Eating pasta makes you happy! It's true! The carbs in pasta increase the body's production of serotonin, which is the neurotransmitter that scientists believe trigger feelings of happiness and well-being.

Is all this talk about pasta making you hungry? Head on over to the best Italian restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks to enjoy a big bowl of your favorite pasta. We have many delicious dishes that feature pasta from the traditional lasagna with our homemade marina to our delicious Cajun shrimp served in a Cajun Alfredo sauce. We can't wait to see you soon!

National Dairy Month - The Italian Way

National Dairy Month is observed every year in June. We can't think of a better way to celebrate than enjoying a big plate of pasta topped with delicious cheese at the best restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks. There are so many wonderful items that include dairy like cheese, milk, ice cream, whipped cream, Alfredo sauce and more. Li'l Rizzo's has taken a look at the history of National Dairy Month and some tasty ways you can enjoy it.

National Dairy Month

In 1937, before there was National Dairy Month, there was National Milk Month, as a way to promote drinking milk. National Milk Month was created to stabilize the dairy demand when production was at a surplus. However, it has now developed into an annual tradition to celebrate the contributions the dairy industry has made to the world after the National Dairy Council stepped in to promote the cause. Because the month celebrated the dairy industry as a whole, the name was changed to National Dairy Month.

There are many great benefits you can enjoy from dairy. From calcium and potassium, dairy products like milk contain nine essential nutrients, which could help you better manage your weight, reduce your risk for high blood pressure, osteoporosis and certain cancers. The protein in it can help build and repair muscle tissue and the vitamin A helps maintain healthy skin.

Celebrate At Li'l Rizzo's

It's not uncommon to find dairy in many Italian dishes because we love cheese! When you visit Li'l Rizzo's here are a few of the dishes we have that feature dairy:

Rizzo's Margherita - Brushed olive oil crust, fresh mozzarella, dollops of ricotta, fresh tomato and basil sprinkled with grated Parmesan.

Cheese Sticks - Mozzarella sticks, deep fried, sprinkled with parsley flakes, Parmesan cheese and served with a side of marinara.

Lasagna - Our lasagna is homemade. 6 layers of pasta, meat sauce, ricotta cheese and Italian sausage. Topped with a blend of mozzarella and Provel cheese then baked.

Baked Mostaccioli - Tubular noodles and meat sauce topped with our homemade Bechamel sauce and a blend of Italian cheeses baked to perfection.

Cajun Shrimp - Succulent shrimp, yellow onion, red and green bell peppers all sauteed in EVOO and fresh chopped garlic. Served with linguine noodles in a Cajun Alfredo sauce.

These are just a few of our favorite menu items that feature dairy. Our family friendly restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks has many different dishes and amazing meals, and we have something for everyone in the family. Osage Beach Li'l Rizzo's 20th Anniversary

This week, Li'l Rizzo's in Osage Beach is celebrating its 20th Anniversary. We opened the doors to our Osage Beach location June 23, 1997, and have been serving the best Italian food at the Lake of the Ozarks there ever since. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of our Osage Beach location, we're taking a look at how Li'l Rizzo's began.

Li'l Rizzo's - The Beginning

Carol Borders moved to the Lake of the Ozarks in 1985 and opened the original Rizzo's Restaurant located on Bagnell Dam Blvd. Rizzo's was an instant success and one of the only restaurants to stay open throughout the winter. The original Rizzo's was remodeled in 1991 and reopened as Maggie Mae's.

In 1987, a second location was added at the corner of HWY 54 and State Route KK. This new store was a more casual version of the original restaurant and offered pizzas and sandwiches, so it was named Li'l Rizzo's. This located remained open until 1989.

A third location opened in 1990 on State Road HH (Horseshoe Bend Parkway). Once Li'l Rizzo's was up and running, it no longer made sense to continue operating the original Rizzo's as an Italian restaurant, so it was at this point it transformed into Maggie Mae's.

In June of 1997, Li'l Rizzo's in Osage Beach opened. Today, we have two convenient locations: Lake Ozark on Horseshoe Bend Parkway and Osage Beach on Premium Outlet Drive across the street from Dierbergs.

Amazing Italian Food At The Lake

The truth is, you can get pizza and pasta lots of places these days. That’s why our mission is to become your favorite restaurant! So how do we do that? With gourmet pizza, pasta, world famous house salad and legendary service! The atmosphere is unpretentious, fun and “Lake Casual” so please, don’t violate our dress code. And oh, by the way, gourmet refers to our fresh ingredients, secret hand-crafted recipes and the love we put into every dish, not the price…

Our pizza is thin crust with dough made from scratch with hand-tossed available at the Osage Beach location. Only the finest meats, cheeses and freshest vegetables adorn the top.  Since most of the pasta recipes originate from “The Hill” area of St. Louis, you can expect to find many regional favorites like Toasted Ravioli, Baked Mostaccioli, Cannelloni con Bianco and Lasagna as well as several house specialty pastas.  But, if there is one stand-out item on the menu it has to be the House Salad.  Cold, crisp and fresh, a blend of Iceberg and Romaine lettuce, diced red peppers, green onions and Provel cheese tossed in a red wine vinegar based creamy Italian dressing and sprinkled with parmesan cheese.

Osage Beach Celebrates 20 Years

Our Osage Beach location opened in 1997, and this month this location will have been opened for 20 years! Li'l Rizzo's in Osage Beach is located next to the Premium Outlets and across the street from Dierbergs. If you're coming to the Lake of the Ozarks to shop, Li'l Rizzo's is the perfect place to stop for lunch during your shopping spree. This location is larger and features tons of seating. In addition, you'll find several TVs scattered around the restaurant, which makes it the best place to watch the game at the Lake of the Ozarks! Because our Osage Beach location is larger, we're able to feature even more specialty pizzas than out location in Lake Ozark. An Italian Father's Day

Father's Day is Sunday, June 18 and Li'l Rizzo's wants to wish all the Dads out there a Happy Father's Day! La Famiglia, family, is very important to Italians and Father's Day is an occasion to remember the key role fathers play in it, and also an occasion to enjoy a delicious Italian meal, of course. For this special occasion, Li'l Rizzo's has taken a closer look at how Italians celebrate Father's Day, and we also have a special promotion just for Dads! (Make sure to read until the end!)

How Italians Celebrate Father's Day

Italy is deeply rooted in its Catholic traditions, so many feasts and festivals revolve around religious events and Father's Day is no exception. Father's Day in America is traditionally celebrated in June. However, in Italy, it's celebrated on March 19, which is Saint Joseph's day, the father of Jesus Christ. This day has transformed into a day to celebrate all fathers in Italy. There are many local customs associated with this day including children writing special cards, poems and nursery rhymes to give their fathers. In addition, school usually use these activities for their lessons. Just like in America, ties, wallets and colognes are the most common presents children give to their father figures. Many events and street markets are organized in the towns. Italian families have a special lunch to honor their father or they go on a trip to celebrate the occasion if it falls during the weekend.

What's Being Served In Italy?

As mentioned earlier, a substantial and tasty lunch is usually what's made when it comes to celebrating special occasions and Father's Day is no different. However, on this day, cakes and biscuits are usually what is served rather than traditional Italian pasta dishes.
