On New Year's Day, the Mizzou Tigers and the Minnesota Golden Gophers will battle for Citrus Bowl supremacy! Order Your New Year's Eve Dinner from Li'l Rizzo's

Li'l Rizzo's has delicious food options to help you celebrate the beginning of a new year! Surprisingly versatile, champagne actually pairs well with a variety of foods. The acidity and low sugar content compliment many ingredients found in our Lake of the Ozarks Italian food. Here is a selection of items from our menu that pair nicely with a glass of champagne!

Toasted Ravioli or Mozzerella Sticks

Our golden meat-filled ravioli or our deep-fried mozzerella sticks are the perfect appetizer pairing for champagne. A dry champagne will lighten up the heaviness of the breading on either dish. Sparkling wine also pairs well with fried foods.

Cannelloni con Bianco

Champagne compliments the earthiness of fungi and therefore pairs well with dishes that include a creamy mushroom sauce like our Cammeloni con Bianco. These rolled noodles are stuffed with beef and pork are served covered in our deliciously creamy mushroom sauce. Try to avoid tomato-based sauces, as the champagne will clash with those flavors.

Linguine con Pesce

Champagne pairs deliciously with seafood dishes, making it a perfect match for our Linguine con Pesce. This mixture of shrimp, crabmeat, clams and mushrooms served in our thick cream sauce is the perfect seafood selection to pair with champagne. A sparkling wine with lemon undertones also pairs nicely with crab.

Shrimp Scampi or Other Shrimp Dishes

Shrimp is a classic champagne pairing. Try our Shrimp Scampi or Fettucine with Shrimp. For a bolder choice, check out our Cajun Shrimp. This succulent shrimp is mixed with onions, green and red bell peppers and served in a cajun butter cream sauce. The shrimp flavors are perfectly highlighted when served in a cream sauce and the sparkling wine is semi-sweet with citrus notes.

Place your carry-out order by calling Li'l Rizzo's at 573-302-1500 for pick-up in Osage Beach or 573-365-3003 for pick-up in Lake Ozark. Or come into either of our Lake of the Ozarks Italian restaurant locations and our servers will give you great pairings with the red or white wines on our menu! Happy New Year from everyone here at your favorite Italian restaurant, Li'l Rizzo's!

4 Fun Facts About Italian Food You May Not Know

Lake of the Ozarks Italian food can be quite different from the traditional cuisine you would find in Italy.  From pizza to pasta, each chef has his or her own take on how it should be made.  At Li'l Rizzo's we focus on generous portions and a wide variety of menu items, all made from the freshest quality ingredients. While Italian food has successfully spread across the world, many facts about traditional Italian cuisine remain unknown or misunderstood.  Here are some interesting facts about Italian food that you may not know!

1. Traditional Italian pizza virtually always has thin crust.

Everyone knows that pizza originated in Italy.  However, something they may not know is what that pizza actually looks like.  Today we have everything from deep dish to thin crust and everything in between, with as many different toppings as you can think of.  Most of the pizza served in America has little resemblance to that which you'd find in Italy. Authentic Italian pizza virtually always has thin crust.

2. Pepperoni pizza is an American variation on Italian food.

If you order a "pepperoni" pizza in Italy, you may be surprised when they bring out a vegetarian pizza for you.  In Italy, the word "peperoni" means bell pepper.  So if you order a pepperoni pizza, you're going to end up with a spicy, thin-crust pizza loaded with peppers. The standard pepperoni pizza as we know it in the United States doesn't event exisit in Italy.  Pepperoni is an entirely American type of salami sausage, usually made from a mixture of pork and beef.

3. Fettuccini alfredo is not traditional Italian cuisine.

While spaghetti and lasagna are essential to traditional Italian cuisine, Fettuccini Alfredo is not. In fact, if you try to order it in Italy, it most likely won't be on the menu. This recipe didn't even originate until 1914, when chef Alfredo di Lelio created it as a trademark menu item at this eponymous restaurant in Rome, Alfredo. He eventually opened up a restaurant in New York, where his dish became famous and spread across the U.S. In Italy, Fettuccini Alfredo remains Alfredo di Lelio's recipe and most chefs have not added it to their menus.

4. You can tell if pasta is under-cooked by throwing it at the wall.

If you've ever eaten stiff or overly chewy pasta, you know that its a fact pasta can be under-cooked or over-cooked. Overcooking pasta is a big concern in Italy.  The term "al dente" is used to describe when the noodles have reached the perfect level of preparation. You've probably heard about throwing spaghetti at a wall to see if it sticks and it's true!  Italian chefs actually do use this test to see if the noodles are done. However, you have to be careful because pasta will stick to the wall if it is overcooked as well.  While slightly overcooked pasta may not have too much of a difference in taste, studies have shown that over-cooked pasta is more difficult to process and digest than that cooked to perfection.

While knowing these facts can be a great conversation topic over dinner at your favorite Lake of the Ozarks Italian restaurant, the important thing is that you see what Italian food has to offer and find what your family loves most.  At Li'l Rizzo's we have everything from Alfredo to Spaghetti and thin crust "Pepperoni" pizza to vegetarian pizza.  Stop on by either of our Lake locations and check out the BEST Italian food at the Lake of the Ozarks!

Excellent

"This is an excellent place to eat and take your family. I have been going to Li'l Rizzo's for years, and it is still one of my favorite places to eat. They have two locations in the Lake of the Ozarks area, however the location at Horseshoe Bend Parkway, offers a better atmosphere, and view. The pizza is especially worthy to add to this review."  - Kriss E of St. Louis, Missouri

Excellent Italian Restaurant with Character

"This is one of the best Italian restaurants I have ever eaten at. It is small and friendly, is located on easy-access street with off-street parking, has a warm dining room plus a comfortable outside deck with a pretty lake view, and has a long bar separated from the dining room which also serves as a friendly drop-in bar for the locals. They are known for their chicken wings -- the the wings with a house salad and a glass of wine, yummm."  - Nancy D

Li'l Rizzo's Restaurant

"Any time we are near the Mall at the Lake, we stop at Li'l Rizzo's. When the kids were at Mizzou, we ate there a lot. The food was always wonderful and the atmosphere was electric. They have some of the best Italian food in the USA and they have always treated us like guests not just customers. We just love the place."  - Albert H of Carthage, Missouri

Pizza Heaven!

"Since moving to the Lake, we will eat pizza ONLY at Li'l Rizzo's. Coming from the northeast of the U.S., we consider ourselves more than qualified to judge great pizza, and this is it. Also, make sure to order a house salad, which surely contains at least 1/4 lb of yummy cheeses. Both locations serve the same spectacular salad, pizza and Italian food."  - Patricia M of Rush Hill, Missouri

Always a Treat!

"Ate here again last week and had spaghetti and meat sauce and their salad. Delish! Especially love their salad. It is a fun place to dine and the servers are always courteous. Their pizza is also special if you are in the mood for a pizza! I dined at the Li'l Rizzo's in Osage Beach and look forward to returning."  - Local Patron 1

Tasty, fun, cozy (in the winter), friendly remarkable!

"Traditionally we go to Li'l Rizzo's on our "check-in" day. We've never, ever been disappointed! Service is phenomenal, food is fantastic and atmosphere is welcoming! What more can you ask for on your first day of a great vacation!!!!"  - Carolyn Meeka

Great Local Italian Restaurant

"We had dinner at Li'l Rizzo's last night, and what an experience! Our server -- Madison -- was simply outstanding. She memorized our order; delivered our drinks first then quickly followed with our appetizer (the spinach dip is one of the best we've ever had). She gave us about 10 minutes after finishing before bringing our salads, and then about 10 minutes after finishing our salads before bringing our entrees. My wife's sausage and peppers was about the best either of us have ever tasted. My grilled chicken with garlic and mushrooms was excellent too; sort of a pasta primavera with grilled chicken. The overall experience was truly one of our best at the Lake; we'll definitely be back to Li'l Rizzo's on our next trip."  - J MacMurdo of Illinois

Outstanding!

"Of the Italian food in the area we liked this one the best! I grew up with home cooked Italian food and it was hard for me to find a place that comes close to home - You did it! Great service, great prices, great portions! Thank you!"  - Dr. Al of Kansas City, Missouri

Pizza Trivia for National Pizza Month

Pizza is one of America's favorite foods, right up there with burgers and fries.  Although pizza may have originated in Europe and would be considered Italian Cuisine at the Lake of the Ozarks and across the US, Americans have accepted it as their own. To continue in the celebration of National Pizza Month, here are some interesting facts about pizza that you may not have known!

Margherita Pizza

Many of you may be wondering where the popular Margherita pizza got its name. The name actually came from Italy's Queen Margherita who visited the Pizzeria Brandi in Naples in 1889.  The pizza maker created a pizza for her that contained the three colors of the new Italian flag: the red of tomato, white of the mozzarella and fresh green basil.

The Largest Pizza

The largest pizza ever made and baked was 122 ft. 8 in. in diameter and weighed 26,883 pounds.  To make this pizza, 9,920 lbs of flour, 198 lbs of salt 3968 lbs of cheeese and 1,984 lbs of tomato puree were needed.  It was made in Norwood, South Africa by Norwood Hypermarket on December 8, 1990.

The First Pizzerias

North America's first pizzeria opened in New York City in 1905 by a man named Gennaro Lombardi. The first "Pizza Hut" in the now popular chain of pizza restaurants appeared in the United States during the 1930s.  Pizza Hut now has over 12,500 stores in over 90 different countries.

Pizza Package Saver

Have you ever wondered who invented the little plastic circular thing that keeps your pizza cheese from sticking to the top of the box?  It was invented by Carmela Vitale of Bix Hills, New York.  She first filed for US patent on February 10, 1983 and it was issued to her on February 12, 1985.  For more information on the pizza package saver and how it works, click here.

Pizza Topping Trivia

  • Americans eat approximately 350 slices of pizza per second or 100 acres of pizza per day
  • 36% of those pizza slices are pepperoni slices, making pepperoni the number one choice among pizza toppings in the US
  • Americans consume around 251,770, pounds of pepperonis each year
  • Each person in America eats roughly 46 slices per year
  • Over 5 billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year
  • In India, their favorite toppings include: pickled ginger, minced mutton and paneer cheese
  • In Japan, their favorite toppings include: mayo Jaga (combination of mayo, potato and bacon), eel and squid
  • In Brazil, they love green peas on pizza
  • In Russia, they love red herring on pizza

Italian food is the most popular type of Ethnic food in America!  Li'l Rizzo's offers Italian food at two great locations at the Lake.  Our food is made with only the freshest quality ingredients and our friendly staff is committed to providing a great experience for you.  So come on in and enjoy the best pizza at the Lake of the Ozarks!

It's National Pizza Month!

October is National Pizza Month! Have you ever wondered where pizza came from? Why do we have an entire month dedicated to the celebration of pizza?  Your favorite Italian restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks did some research and we have the answers!  In honor of National Pizza Month, here are some things about pizza you may not have known!

History of the Pizza

Although the exact origin of the "Pizza" can be argued, Naples is known as the home of modern pizza.  Pizza began as a peasant's meal; they used what few ingredients they could get their hands on to produce modern pizza dough and then topped it with olive oil and herbs.

The introduction of the Water Buffalo gave pizza another dimension with mozzarella cheese.  While other cheeses have made their way onto our American style pizzas, no Italian pizzeria would ever use the dried shredded type of cheese we do.

In the 18th and early 19th centuries, the true modern Italian pizza was born.  Before then, tomatoes were thought to be poisonous.  The innovative and possibly starving peasants of Naples started using the fruit in their foods, including pizza.  It took time for the rest of society to accept this peasant food, but once the aristocracy tried pizza, they couldn't get enough!

Origin of National Pizza Month

Although the contributions of those first pizzerias in the United States cannot be ignored, the returning American soldiers who fought in Italy during World War II were really who brought the love of pizza to the states and pushed its popularity.

October was designated as National Pizza Month in 1984 by Gerry Durnell, the founder of Pizza Today magazine.  The month was chosen because the first issue of the magazine debuted in October of that year.  As a pizzeria owner in Santa Claus, Indiana, Durnell realized there was no publication to support his growing business or the industry in general.  His creation of the national magazine, as well as National Pizza Month, served his purpose and solved the problem.

National Pizza Month Today

Today, National Pizza Month is still observed every October across the United States and some of Canada.  However, every month could be considered National Pizza Month with the amount of pizza we consume each month.

There are an estimated 63,000 pizzerias in the country and 94% of Americans eat pizza at least once a month.  This puts the consumption at about 45 slices per person in the United States each year.  As evidenced by devouring 100 acres of pizza per day or 350 slices per second, Americans definitely love their pizza!

What better place to enjoy your favorite pizza than the best Italian restaurant at the Lake? Celebrate National Pizza Month by grabbing a slice, or two with your favorite toppings. Li'l Rizzo's is the place to go for the best pizza at the Lake of the Ozarks. With two great locations, great pizza is just around the corner.  You can dine in for a unique Italian experience or take your pizza home with you!

Li'l Rizzo's has been in the Borders family since the very beginning!  Carol Borders, along with Mike Rizzo and Ed Alexander, founded the original Rizzo's in 1985.  The restaurant was a success and soon Carol acquired full ownership.  Two other restaurants have since opened, which brings us to her son Bill.  Carol and Bill opened the Premium Outlets location together and now he runs both it and the Horseshoe Bend location.  To get to know who's running your favorite Italian restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks today, we asked Bill some questions and here are his answers!

Q:  Tell us about your family.

A:  My mother is a remarkable woman who overcame many obstacles to become a successful business person. She moved to the Lake from St. Louis in the spring of 1985 to be the dining room manager of a new Italian Restaurant.  She worked tirelessly at Rizzo's and ultimately bought the business from her partners.  She opened three more successful restaurants before her retirement in 2003.

I have an incredible, lovely wife Windy, we have been married for 8 years this October.  The two greatest joys in my life are my daughters Rogan, age 5 and Dagen 3.  Now that the girls are in school Windy has become more active in the business of Rizzo's, my retirement plan perhaps?

Q: What’s your favorite movie and why?

A:  I don't know that I have a favorite movie, but I am an avid history buff, especially American History.  I love anything set in a period from the past.

Q:  What kind of music do you listen to?

A:  I rarely listen to music anymore, but when I do I like RUSH!

Q:  What did you enjoy most about serving in the US Navy?

A:  I was working at McDonnell Aircraft Company in St. Louis when a friend told me he had just joined the Navy to be a pilot and was shipping out next week.  Flying F-18's sounded a lot better to me than building F-18's, so I rushed down to the recruiting office and filled out an application.  Three weeks later I was on my way to Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida for Aviation Officer's Candidate school.

One of the first things you do at NAS Pensacola is submit to an extensive physical exam where I failed the vision requirements to become a pilot.  I was given the opportunity and agreed to stay on as a Naval Flight Officer which in most cases is the back-seater/weapons system operator. Flying in the Navy, on and around aircraft carriers was the greatest experience in my life until I had children.  The sense of pride and duty to country you derive from military service is hard to explain but extremely fulfilling.

Q:  Why did you get in the restaurant business?

A:  When I was a kid my parents owned a neighborhood bar in St. Louis and I can remember going in on Sundays and helping my dad clean.  He would hand me a broom and tell me to sweep the parking lot.  My interests were always in aviation and I really had no desire to be in the food and beverage business, but after leaving the military, and a failed attempt at a business in Kansas City I needed a job.  So, in the Spring of '94 I became my mother's retirement plan.

Q:  What motivates you at work?

A:  This may sound cheesy to some people, but what motivates Windy and I is the responsibility we have to our employees to run a successful business.  We have many families who depend on us for their livelihood and that is a responsibility we do not take lightly.  Yes, the profit motive is there, but you must take care of your customers and employees first and the rest will take care of its self.

Q: What’s your favorite item on your menu?

A: Pizza, because there are endless variations.

Q:  What do you like to do in your spare time?

A:  Please define "spare time".

Q:  Who do you admire most and why?

A:  I admire everyone who gets up in the morning when it's difficult to keep going and the easy thing to do is quit.

Be sure to stop into either of our Lake of the Ozarks restaurant locations to try Bill's favorite menu item, the Pizza!  As he said, there are so many different variations to choose from. so there's something for everyone in the family to love!  For the best Italian food at Lake of the Ozarks, it's Li'l Rizzo's!
