What is a Calzone?
Chances are you’ve heard of a calzone, and if you’ve been to our Italian restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks, you’ve likely seen them on our menu. However, ours are a little sweeter than the traditional Italian calzones. If you’ve never tried a calzone, you may not really know what they are. Well, Li’l Rizzo’s is here to explain!
A calzone is a type of Italian pizza that is folded and filled. It takes on the shape of a half moon and is made of salted bread dough. A typical calzone is baken in an oven and filled with salami or ham, mozzarella, ricotta and Parmesan or pecorino cheese, amalgamated with an egg. However, regional preferences differ and you can find calzones that include other toppings typcially associated with pizzas. Smaller calzones, known as panzerotti, can also be fried in olive oil rather than baked. You can even find dessert calzones like the one's we have here at our Lake of the Ozarks Italian restaurant.
The calzone originated in Naples, Italy during the 18th Century. Translated "pant legs," calzone was originally created as a "walk around pizza" that could be carried out of the restaurant and eaten without utensils. This Italian style turnover was created by folding a pizza in half. Keep in mind that pizzas in Italy are small, single servings meant for one person. These sandwich-sized calzones are often sold at Italian lunch counters or by street vendors.
At Li'l Rizzo's, we offer two different sweet dessert calzones:
Chocolate Calzone
Flakey pastry shell full of rich dark milk chocolate, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup.
Apple Calzone
Flakey pastry shell filled with cinnamon and apple slices, topped with caramel and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Be sure to try one of our tasty calzones next time you’re at either of our Lake of the Ozarks restaurant locations! Whether you’re looking for something savory or something sweet, our calzones will do the trick. See you soon for some of the best Italian food at the Lake of the Ozarks you’ll ever have!
