Where does "Happy Hour" come from?
After a hard day's work, there's nothing better than kicking back and relaxing with your friends and a few cold ones! Happy Hour provides a time to relax and take your mind off the stress of day to day tasks. Let's take a look at the History of Happy Hour and then join us at Li'l Rizzo's for the BEST Happy Hour at the Lake of the Ozarks!
The term "Happy Hour" actually originated right here in the United States. Back in the 1920's, the term was slang for the scheduled time of on-ship performances when the sailors were a little "happy" from drinking. Due to the prohibition, the act of drinking before dinnertime began around the same time on shore. Friends would gather for illegal cocktail hours before going out for dinner because restaurants could not serve alcohol.
The term became more mainstream when an article featuring military life was released in 1959 in the Saturday Evening Post. Over time, this "happy hour" concept has transitioned from a prelude to an evening out into more of an after-work ritual. To curb drunk driving, many bars started offering free or discounted appetizers to attendees in the 1980's. Though the prohibition was later repealed, the concept stuck around and is celebrated in many places, like our Lake of the Ozarks sports bar today!
Today you can visit almost any bar or restaurant between the hours of 4 and 7 pm for some type of happy hour discount. Many places offer 1/2 price drinks or $1 off certain drinks for a happy hour special. Other places like Li'l Rizzo's might also offer 1/2 price appetizers to go with it. The concept today is somewhat of a marketing strategy to boost sales on slow weekdays.
